‘I’ve never been afraid of snakes’
If you want to know about snakes, George VanHorn is the man. VanHorn has owned and operated Reptile World Serpentarium east of St. Cloud for 35 years. In what may be the scariest show in town, he displays his collection to oohs and ahs from visitors but also extracts venom for scientific research. The facility houses about 600 snakes, including cobras. VanHorn doesn’t like to talk about it, but he made headlines in June 1995 when a 12-foot king cobra gave him a near-fatal bite. VanHorn set his mind on a career with snakes after a visit to the Miami Serpentarium as a child. Years later, after serving in the military, he was hired after he picked up 50 sea snakes for the facility in Central America. VanHorn recently spoke with Sentinel reporter Linda Florea. More…
