AirTran pilots have till Sept. 21 to vote on pact

AirTran Holdings Inc. said it reached a tentative contract agreement with its pilots union. The board of the National Pilots Association endorsed the accord, and a ratification vote by the 1,450 pilots will run until Sept. 21, AirTran said Thursday in a statement. The Orlando-based airline can’t discuss terms, spokesman Dave Hirschman said. The proposed contract, replacing an agreement withdrawn in June, follows talks that resumed in July with a federal mediator. All six members of the union board urged pilots to support the accord, union spokesman Brian Gaudet said. Talks began in 2005 when the current contract became open to renegotiation. The main stumbling blocks have been scheduling and “quality-of- life issues.”
